Question: I want do a theme garden for Grades 3-5. How do I do it?
Answer: The emphasis is now on focused content. Look at your social studies curriculum areas as well as science content for thematic inspiration. This will focus your garden efforts. Then decide on which season(s) you will be "in the garden." For example, if you will be teaching a big unit on your state, choose a garden theme that focuses on historic crops or current agricultural products of your state, or plant your garden in the shape of your state, perhaps dividing it by the county divisions. You may decide to do a particular ethnic food type of garden if you are studying different cultures. The important thing in any theme garden is to choose a theme and then carry it through at all levels from planning to harvest. Theme gardens give you the opportunity to make interdisciplinary links in your curriculum.
