I facilitate a garden grant for pre-school children that are underprivileged. We have limited space and are surrounded by concrete and fences. I would like to share curriculum and craft ideas. My programs usually begin with a book to introduce the days theme, a discovery walk around the garden this is when the kids sample veggies that are ready to eat), discussion of garden "friends" (insects) and end with a craft. I've been teaching this program for 4 years, and the kids favorite time in the garden is picking and eating. It's amazing to see them fighting over broccoli, tomatoes, strawberries and lettuce.
Number of Kids Involved: 45Square Feet of Gardens: 40
Grades Involved:
We are interested in being E-Mail Pals and would like to exchange: Curriculum for pre-k kids, and ideas for books to read, crafts to make and fun foods to grow.
How our project is helping kids grow: They have a basic understanding of what a plant needs to grow. They really enjoy eating the plants they tend to and don't realize they are eating healthy. I encourage the kids to ask their parents to buy peas, cucumbers, tomatoes, etc. when they go grocery shopping.
