We are a TMD special needs class at MBHS in sunny Horry County, SC and we love to work in the garden! Our students' ages range from 14 to 20 years of age. Most of them are on the autism spectrum with one of our young ladies confined to a wheelchair. We started our greenhouse last year and had some success with seedlings and outdoor plants. We are organic growers and hope to become more "green" by setting up a rainwater collection barrel for irrigation to save water. We plan to grow vegetables this year and hopefully sell them, raise money to support our efforts and hopefully have some left over to have a pizza delivered! Eventually we will have our own website with photographs of our crops and links to helpful sites that may help other students.

We are interested in being E-Mail Pals and would like to exchange: Eventually we will have our own website with photographs of our crops and links to helpful sites that may help other students. We would love to be in contact with schools in the US and abroad to share tips and start friendships.
How our project is helping kids grow: Myrtle Beach High School is an excellent school and already had built the green house many years ago but it fell into disrepair and was not being used. Last year with the help of Mr. Perry's wood shop class volunteers, our special needs class was able to fill pots to in order to plant seeds, till the soil to accept mature plants, build a wheelchair accessible raised box garden and generally get the old greenhouse up and running again. We had some success with the mature plants and some failures with the seedlings but we learned valuable lessons and know what we need for the next season. Our students are not independent workers yet but with each visit to the greenhouse we see some independent skills emerging in all of them
